Reed canary grass, whose scientific name is phalaris arundinacea, is a tall, perennial bunchgrass widely distributed in Europe, Asia, North Africa, and North America.

This grass is also known as the gardener's garter and generally form vast monospecific stands along the banks of lakes and rivers and in moist open areas.

The blades are usually green, but can be variegated. Spikelets are light green, but often striped dark green or purple.

Reed canary grass is widely used as an ornamental plant, including such diverse (striped) cultivars as 'Castor' and 'Feezy' (sometimes called ribbon grass).
