Persian ironwood, whose botanical name is parrotia persica, is a deciduous tree in the hamamelidaceae family and is closely related to the hazel of the hamamelis genus.

Due to its bright fall colors and smooth patterned bark, this plant is widely cultivated as an ornamental tree.

The leaves are alternate, ovate, often slightly oblique, with wavy edges. They are shiny green, turning dark purple or bright orange and red in the fall.

The bark is smooth, peeling pinkish brown, leaving a mosaic of cinnamon, pink, green and pale yellow patches.
