The licorice-plant, whose scientific name is helichrysum petiolare, is a type of flowering plant in the asteraceae family.

Also called liquorice plant, it is native to South Africa, where it is known as imphepho.

It is an evergreen subshrub about 45 cm tall with gray-green hairy leaves.

The leaves have a faint licorice scent, but are not closely related to real licorice.

Because licorice-plant thrives in the garden and in the wild, most imphepho is harvested from wild cultivation.

This plant is used primarily in African traditional rites and ceremonies, and in traditional medicine.
