The botanical name for kaikomako (derived from the Maori kaikōmako) is pennantia corymbosa, a small dioecious forest tree of New Zealand.

Still young, this plant has small leaves with wrinkled and branched stems, but as it matures the leaves become much larger.

It is also called "duck's foot" in English, because of the shape of the leaves when young.

It produces small creamy white flowers from November to February and glossy black berries in the fall.
