The Japanese bay tree with the scientific name machilus thunbergii is a widely distributed species of flowering plant in the lauraceae family.

It is also called red machilus tree, and is native to Vietnam, Taiwan, southeastern and north-central China, the Korean Peninsula, and Japan.

It is a hardy evergreen tree, usually growing to 10-15 m tall, and is used as a timber and roadside tree.

The bark is used to make makko, a powder used in mosquito repellent incense.
