The canyon live oak, whose botanical name is quercus chrysolepis, is a species of evergreen oak found in the western United States and Mexico.

Also called canyon oak, golden cup oak, or maul oak, it is an evergreen tree with a wide, round crown and horizontal branches. It usually reaches a height of 6 to 30 meters and often takes the form of a shrub.

The leaves are dark green with a glossy upper surface. They are geometrically flat.

The many animals that eat its leaves include the black-tailed jackrabbit, beaver, brush rabbit, red-backed vole, Sonoma chipmunk, cactus mouse, deer mouse, and porcupine.
