This type of persimmon, commonly called American persimmon, has the scientific name diospyros virginiana. It is also called common persimmon, eastern persimmon, simmon, possumwood, possum apples, or sugar plum.

The plant itself is a small tree, usually 30 to 80 feet (9 to 24 m) tall. The trunk is short and slender, the branches often drooping, forming a broad or narrow rounded canopy.

The stem is very short and the fruit is subglobose, about 1 inch in diameter. The ripe fruit is orange-yellow in color, slightly bluish, and has a sweet taste.

One of the jokes among Southerners is to convince foreigners to taste unripe persimmons. This is because their bitter taste is very surprising to the unfamiliar.
