Persian ironwood whose botanical name is parrotia persica, is a woody plant in the witch hazel family, which includes witch hazel, winter hazel and Chinese witch hazel.

It has bark similar to the more common Chinese elm, sycamore, and plane tree. Its lush summer foliage resembles that of a beech tree. Its bright fall color combination resembles the spirit of smoked tree and sweetgum.

Persian ironwood grows naturally only in small areas of hardwood forests in northern Iran and near the southern tip of the Caspian Sea in Azerbaijan.

Persian ironwood looks very beautiful with its smooth bark, which peels off in scales and patches, revealing a new mosaic of silver, green, and cream bark underneath, that is, after the tree loses its leaves in winter.
