Camphor tree, whose botanical name is Cinnamomum camphor, is a species of evergreen tree native to China, south of the Yangtse River, Taiwan, southern Japan, Korea, India and Vietnam.

This tree is also commonly known as camphor wood or camphor laurel.

In Japan, it is called "kusunoki" and is considered a sacred tree.

There are five of the largest known kusunoki with trunk circumferences exceeding 20 meters, and the largest tree, Kamō no Ōkusu ("Great camphor of Kamō"), reaches a circumference of 24.22 meters.

Another example of this sacred tree is the 700-year-old camphor tree that grows in the center of Kayashima Station.
