The eastern redbud, whose botanical name is cercis canadensis, is a large deciduous shrub or small tree native to eastern North America.

The leaves are simple, alternate, heart-shaped throughout the margin, thin, slightly hairy on the underside, 7 to 12 cm long and wide.

These leaves are eaten by the caterpillars of some lepidoptera—for example, Henry's elfin, the redbud leaffolder, the red-humped caterpillar, etc.

In the wild, eastern redbud is often found as a native understory in mixed forests and hedgerows.
