Sacred bamboo, botanical name nandina domestica, is a species of flowering plant in the berberidaceae family.

It is also called nandina or heavenly bamboo, and is native to East Asia from the Himalayas to Japan.

It is widely grown as an ornamental in parks for its bright red foliage in autumn and attractive new leaves in spring.

Despite the name "sacred bamboo," this tree is not a bamboo, but an upright evergreen shrub that typically grows from the ground without branches, just like bamboo.

The petiolate leaves are petiolate compound (two or three apexes), oval to ovate or lance-shaped, with the petiole swollen at the base.
