Steem is not an organization or even a group of people. It's a set of software components below the application layer in the stack. Steemit, Inc is the sole entity that develops it and witnesses run it.

It's primarily Steemit, Inc's job to persuade website owners to integrate SMTs into their websites. Steem should be marketed to website owners and to application developers.

As we all must have observed, normies tend to be uninterested in dealing with things like creating an account and managing their keys. There are even Steemians who've been on Steem for years who still struggle to wrap their heads around the difference between Steem and Steemit. These people tend to think in terms of Steem being a website. Those normies who have been persuaded to create a Steem account and start using one of the blogging applications usually don't have much in the way of staying power because most people are not pioneers at anything and don't think in terms of potentials. Normies just want to use well-designed apps that are painless to use and allow them to do things they enjoy.

In addition to Steemit, Inc responsible for its development and witnesses who run it, what leaders can a piece of middleware even have? Steemit, Inc's engineers are busy coding and testing as we're having this conversation. Witnesses run their servers and some of them also develop. There are other developers, too. They're the doers. We the bloggers are the talkers/writers. I've been told a lot of talking goes on on DTube as well. I'm under the impression that DSound users primarily upload music.

I don't understand why we should elect someone to be a leader. We already vote for witnesses. Steemit, Inc is a private company that makes its own decisions. How would a representative be elected and what would that representative do? Who would that person represent?
