Since the removal of the presidency in January 2017, Barack and Michelle Obama have enjoyed a multi-faceted retirement. In addition to public official portraits and plans to publish their memoirs, the two have now brought a wonderful surprise. The news that the Obama couple will cooperate with Netflix to set up the film production company Higher Ground Productions.

The Obama couple formally declared themselves "filmmakers."

Netflix announced on May 21 that they signed a one-year contract with the Obama couple. Higher Ground Productions will have the right to supervise all kinds of related content, including documentaries, movies, albums, and documentary films.

The Obama couple, who was promoted to a film and television producer, said that he had decided to step into film production to discover and nurture those talented, inspiring and creative “voices” that are not seen, “help them and the world. To share our own stories, we believe these "voices" can promote interpersonal empathy."

Michelle further pointed out that this collaboration will be related to his passion for "storytelling": "Barack and I have always believed that "storytelling" can bring strength to people and can inspire us to think differently about the world around us. Help us open up our room to others.” She also looks forward to a combination with Netflix that can more effectively convey the positive influence of “storytelling”: “Netflix's one of the best services is ideal for our philosophy. For this new partnership, we are all I am very excited."
