The Retainer

Is there another profession
with license to steal?
Charges before listening
a fee that’s unreal.

Late for your closing?
Never called back?
Took calls in your face
at two-fifty a crack.

Who gave him this license
to skim from the pot?
Barrister cohorts did
by government fiat.

He'll aid you in divorce,
first check what you make.
Then get you to fighting
to increase his take.

For all Retainers know
you’re in state of distress.
Quite blinded by emotion,
your life in total mess.

They'll pretend to care
to keep you in control.
You’ll get their first bill
that makes your eyes roll.

Retainers will steal
from old women in towers,
who having no one else
give attorneys their powers.

When grandmas pass on
or move to nursing homes
the lives that they saved for
pass to their law gnomes.

Retainers in elevators
mock a defendant
as if they were chattel
keeping them affluent.

Society’s men of letters,
retainers speak for us.
Experience has shown
they’ll throw you under bus.

So live free of problems,
try to find a sweet spouse.
To make life even sweeter,
avoid The Retainer louse.
