China parades in the sky of Taiwan... and raises terror

Taiwan on Friday announced a new major incursion by Chinese aviation into its air defense zone, the second largest in a single day this year, involving 18 aircraft.

The Taiwan Defense Ministry said the planes were 12 J-11 and J-16 fighters and two H-6 bombers.

This brings the number of Chinese air incursions since the beginning of the year to more than 370.

On Jan. 23, 39 Chinese aircraft entered Taiwan's air defense zone.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry said it had sent planes to transmit warnings and deployed air defense missile systems to track Chinese planes.
The island of Taiwan lives under the threat of an invasion from China, which considers it part of its territory, and will regain it one day, by force if necessary.

Since September 2020, it has recorded similar numbers of incursions into its air defense zone.

Over the past year, AFP counted 969 incursions by Chinese armed forces aircraft into the Taiwanese air defense zone, more than double the number of incursions in 2020 (380).

Taiwan's air defense zone differs from its airspace, the former is much broader and partially overlaps with the Chinese air defense zone.
