Alien in the Clouds

in #landscapephotography5 years ago (edited)

Today was the first time since my hip surgery November 8th 2018 that I have attempted to fly with my boyfriend, Jeff, in his plane.

Because we were not sure how long I would be able to stay out, we decided to take a quick flight to Erie, Pennsylvania. Erie is approximately fifty minutes to an hour away by car but eighteen minutes away by airplane.

This is the amazing sunset we saw on the flight home! Do you see the alien face? We got quite a bit of a laugh off of that picture [no edits were done].

Getting in the cockpit and out of a cockpit is challenging as I have to be very careful what angles I turn my right leg. I also have to be careful to put the most weight on my left leg so that was a little bit of gymnastics getting in and out and off the plane's wing.

Did you ever wonder how much it costs in fuel to fly an airplane? The pilot must make sure that there is plenty of fuel prior to take off. Today Jeff put $100 of airplane fuel in the plane [Piper Cessna]. The plane has to be balanced on both wings so ten gallons went into each wing. Once he is done fueling, Jeff checks the gas from the bottom of the tanks to make sure there's no water in the gas...and then it's time for take off!

An eighteen minute flight to Erie burns approximately three gallons of fuel each way equaling approximately $15 in fuel each way.

I just love it for the view and that feeling of peacefulness because there's nobody [planes] up there in the sky with you most of the time.

Best Sunsets Ever

What dreams
are made in this?
We climb
above cotton clouds
and view God's vast expanse.
Floating 'bove mortals,
seduced by sky's romance.
Come,
embrace flight
axhalt in this
eternal portal.

I'm sure it was far more than $30 round trip for that flight, factoring in all the other expenses that go with owning and piloting a plane, but what a fantastic thing to be able to do!!! Gorgeous photo and love the poem!

You are correct, but I just wanted to focus on something small so people might be able to understand a little bit of the differences. He has certainly put a nice chunk of money into keeping this plane up to speed. Occasionally he needs to upgrade certain controls to meet qualifications. Or because it's an older plane, he needs to repair things. Jeff has a real love for flying and his dad was a commercial pilot but Jeff promised himself he would never be a commercial pilot because he said that takes the fun out of flying. So he flies for the pure joy of flying. Thank you for the compliments! Much love.
