Once upon a time hundreds of millions of years ago, New York State was at the bottom of a tropical sea. In this tropical sea over many a millennia, Limestone a sedimentary rock formed from layers of organic life settling to sea floor as it died.
In the early 1900s, this area was mined for the abundant supply of limestone found here.

Since ancient times many uses have been found for Limestone such as building supplies when cut or crushed, as well as mortar and a rudimentary cement when fired in a kiln with other materials. Limestone is in large part made up of calcite which has base qualities, because of this quality it can also be used in agriculture to neutralize high acid content in soil. Once fired in a kiln it is broken down to calcium carbonate for this use. Limestone in powder form can also be used as a filler in many different products like paint and paper, as well as plastics. Limestone also has qualities that make it useful in coal mining as well as coal burning by filtering out some of the pollutants from both processes.

This is a Limestone kiln near the quarry that was abandoned almost a century ago. It was used to fire the limestone mined here for some of the uses mentioned above.

As nature has gradually taken back this area over the last one hundred years, it has become a pretty and interesting spot off the beaten path to see, and one of my favorite spots to visit. I hope you have enjoyed visiting it with me!

Cool photos and very green but you can still see the rocks and the layering. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! :) Nature has definitely taken over there, but you can still see the remnants of the mining done.

No worries. Great photos and looking forward to your future posts!

If that limestone could talk it would have some very interesting stories to tell. So much history, I didn't know they used it for filtering out the pollutants of coal. Nice shots.

I imagine it indeed would! I was not aware of just how many uses for Limestone there were and are until I did the research. The historic use of it by humans over the millennia is quite interesting.

very interesting description! This is both a tutorial text and beautiful graphics. Well done! I like it

Thank you, I really appreciate that! I've always been interested in geology and history and enjoyed combining both with my photography. I definitely plan on writing more posts like this in the future.

I think that this is a great topic for messages. I liked reading. From the point of view of geology, you can tell a lot of interesting things.
