Lake Kelimutu legend
Lake Kelimutu is a volcanic crater lake located in Flores, Indonesia. It is known for its unique feature of three separate and distinct colored lakes within the same caldera. In the local culture, Lake Kelimutu is believed to be the resting place of departed souls. Each of the three lakes is associated with different spirits and has its own significance:
Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (Lake of Young Men and Maidens): This is typically turquoise or light blue in color. It is believed to be the resting place for the spirits of young people who have died. They are said to be residing in a peaceful and calm afterlife.
Tiwu Ata Polo (Lake of Old People): This lake is usually red or brown in color. It is believed to be the final resting place for the spirits of the elderly. They are said to find peace here after their long lives.
Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Bewitched or Enchanted Lake): The third lake can vary in color, often being either green or black. It is associated with evil spirits and considered a place of punishment for those who have led wicked lives.
