아내와 나는 산에서 만났고, 북한산 다음으로 많이 찾은 곳은 설악산이다. 특히 토요일 오후에 상봉동에서 버스를 타고, 인제, 원통을 거쳐, 용대리에서 저녁 6-7시쯤에 하차하면, 백담사 계곡길을 걸어서, 백담산장에서 숙박을 하고, 다음날 영시암, 오세암, 마등령을 넘어, 외설악으로 하산하는 코스를 즐겨 다녔었다.

그때의 과도한 등산의 후유증으로 이제는 둘다 무릅들이 시원치 않아서, 그렇게 등산을 할수는 없지만, 백담계곡 및 백담산장정도는 찾아보자는 생각으로 가볍게 가방하나만 들고, 옛 백담산장을 찾았다.

그러나 백담등산안내소로 바뀌어 있었고, 5월15일까지는 입산통제기간이었다. 아내가 그곳의 직원들과 옛 백담산장에 대하여 추억하는 이야기를 했더니, 그 직원들도 많은 부분에서 공감해 주었고, 등산 예약을 했었기 때문에, 입산허가서를 쓰고, 영시암까지 갔다 올수 있었다.

My wife told her memories about the staff and the old Baekdam mountain cottage. The staff also shared a lot of things with her and made a reservation for mountain climbing.
백담계곡에서 영시암까지의 길을 아내와 걸으면서, 나무들이 얼마나 크게 자랐는지, 어떻게 바뀌었는지, 그길 하나하나를 추억할수 있었다.
Walking with the wife from the Baekdam valley to Yong Siam, I could remember how big the trees grew and how they changed.
영시암까지 왕복길은 너무 짧았고, 내설악의 푸르른 신록은 어서 다시 산으로 오라고 부르는 듯 했다. 다시 설악을 누벼볼 꿈을 꾸는 산행이었고, 젊은 날에 아내와 걸었던 꿈같은 길을 되집어 볼수 있어서, 정말 행복했다.
The way back to Yeoshiam was too short, and the green greens of mythology seemed to be called to come back to the mountains. I was really happy to be able to take a dream road that I walked with my wife on a young day.
