Crypto-Stewardship & Korean Community Building [Steem Park Seoul Opening Nov. 18th]

Public Realm-ing with STEEM

In a few days Seoul Steem Park will be open to the public! This project is so exciting because it's yet another example of how communities can crowdfund cryptocurrency to be used for physical, public works. This is a rare thing to witness in the cryptocurrency landscape today, but an increasingly common practice in the world of Steem.

Projects like this are a testament to the community atmosphere on Steemit and the stewardship that carries over into our real-life neighborhoods.

The Seoul Steem Park project is very different than the one @hansikhouse and I implemented in Brooklyn this past summer (and that's exciting!) The project, spearheaded by @successtrainer and @roychoi (along with the help of a huge #kr team) created a beautiful mural to celebrate "Deer Park". This collaborative art project is now a permanent fixture of a popular park in Seoul. @hansikhouse and I are thrilled that the Seoul team created something so unique and distinct from our Brooklyn version. Each neighborhood has it's own unique fingerprint. When it comes to public art, impactful projects should reflect both the community on the ground (where the work is made) and the community online (those who support it). Seoul Steem Park has created a powerful representation of those two communities.

Please watch their timelapse video!

KR Community Making Waves

The Park project is just one example. There's a lot we can all learn from the Korean community here on Steemit. They are the fastest growing network on the platform and (perhaps arguably) they are doing a far better job than the English network when it comes to welcoming newbies, combatting plagiarism, creating subgroups of disciplines and curating valuable content from a diverse scope of bloggers. Cultivating this dynamic is hard work and requires rigorous community building. Here's an example (below) of the range of community sub-groups that are active today. To learn more about these subtopics, make sure to check out @hansikhouse's presentation on the #kr community from SteemFest2.

  • Socio-Finance: CoinKorea, Kr-Loan
  • Professional Knowledge: Kr-Science, Kr-Psychology
  • Art & Culture: Kr-Art, Kr-Cartoon, Kr-Webtoons, Kr-Writing, Kr-Essay,Kr-WritingContest, Kr-PhotoContest, Muksteem
  • Community: Kr-Market, Kr- Auction, Kr-Agora, Kr-Meetup, Kr-Game
  • Life: Kr-Mom, Kr-Dads, Kr-Baby, Kr-Dogs, Kr-Cats, Kr-Daily, Kr-Life, Kr-Poem

The range and categorization of these sub-networks represent a kind of bootstrapped "Communities" feature before that feature even exists! It's a breakdown that all languages on Steemit should research and take note of. Once Steemit launches communities, we'll all have a lot more tools to play with in terms of empowering a broad range of disciplines (learn more here).

I was blown away to see all these categories during @hansikhouse's presentation and wanted to share the list with you all today. After the talk, I was interviewed by @successtrainer and @roychoi at SteemFest2, below:

If your in Seoul, check out Steem Park on November 18th!

Thanks to @successtrainer @roychoi @hansikhouse + @mintvilla for sharing what they've learned about community building in #kr, creating innovative projects and acting as an example for other networks within Steemit to learn from.

Pls can you followback?

My wife was adopted and brought to the US from Seoul. So we have always wanted to visit to try and track down her biological family. Now we have another reason to go! I love these 'Steem parks', they are a great idea and, imo, a fantastic way to show the world what 'our' community is all about. Nice work!

Wonderful! Absolutely, definitely check it out if you both are ever in Seoul!

Very cool project, congratulations to all who made it happen! Also, the Kr community is impressive, I had no idea. Yes we can learn from the great example they have created. I'll check out @hansikhouse's presentation.

I just came from @hansikhouse's post, you guys are so inspiring! Hoping that some time after the new year (after the craziness of holidays and the start of our winter business slows down) I can make it down to the city for a hangout!

This is amazing! loved the creativity.

If I have children I would definetely go there :D

Looks like a fun place for kids... and Steeminators? Public Art needs a protector.

Stewardship and giving back is a selfless and admirable way to be. Thanks for setting the example and taking the lead. good post.

@voronoi how can this get to Africa?

Steem Park is for anyone who wants to kickstart a community initiative. The Korean team did it completely independently from us! They found a local venue (a site) and began raising funds through blog posts about the park, and the idea for the installation. Over time, they raised enough SBD and Steem to complete the mural and all of the workshops / events surrounding it.

Can we partner?. +pls follow back

I'd be happy to talk with you more on steemit.chat, you can find me there. (I'll do my best to respond promptly). You should connect with @stach and @steem-lagos as well, they're both doing really impactful work within the Nigerian community.

wow this is great work done !!!
