노동절과 VS 메이데이 메이데이 메이데이! [Mayday VS mayday mayday mayday!]

제가 어릴적 정말 어릴적 이었습니다.
노동절의 메이데이가 영화에 나오는 메이데이와 똑 같은 것으로 알고 있었던 저의 흑역사가...

그래서 제대로 알아보니 구조신호의 메이데이(Mayday)는 노동절의(May day)의 의미와 구분할 수 있도록 반드시 세 번 연달아 말하게 되어있다는 사실을 알았죠.

왜 노동자와 구조신호의 메이데이가 같은 철자로 되어있는지 알 것 같은 생각이 듭니다.

ㅇ 개설 : 노동절은 ‘근로자의 날’의 전 이름으로 메이데이(May Day) 혹은 워커스 데이(Workers’ Day)라고도 한다. 근로자의 연대와 단결된 힘을 보이고 노고를 위로하고 사기, 권익, 복지를 향상시키며 근로의욕을 더욱 높이자는 뜻에서 제정된 휴일로서 매년 5월 1일에 기념한다.
ㅇ 연원 및 변천 :
노동절의 유래는 자본주의가 급격히 발전한 1800년대 중반에서부터 찾을 수 있다. 자본주의 발달과 함께 성장한 기업은 국가권력과 결탁해 노동자들을 착취했고 노동자들은 열악한 노동환경과 적은 보수로부터 스스로 자신들의 권익을 지키기 위해 역량을 모으기 시작하였다. 1866년 제1차 인터네셔널 강령에서 8시간 노동제의 법제화를 요구한 이래 이 문제는 자본주의가 제국주의 단계로 이행하던 19세기 후반 세계노동운동의 중요한 문제였다. 1869년 미국 펜실베니아주의 필라델피아에서 전국노동조합연합단체인 노동기사단이 결성되었고, 1884년 5월 1일 미국의 방직노동자가 8시간 노동제를 요구하며 쟁의를 시작하고 각 노동단체는 이에 호응하여 총파업을 단행했다. 이어 1886년 미국노동조합총연맹이 설립되어 5월 1일 하루 8시간 노동제의 쟁취를 위해 총파업을 단행하였고 이 과정에서 많은 노동자들이 사망하거나 부상당하고 체포되었다.

프랑스혁명 100주년을 기념하여 프랑스 파리에서 1889년 7월 열린 제2차 인터네셔널 창립대회에서 8시간 노동제의 쟁취와 유혈탄압을 가한 경찰에 대항해 투쟁한 미국노동운동을 기념하기 위해 세계 각국의 노동운동 지도자들에 의해 노동절이 결정되었다. 이 대회에서는 5월 1일을 ‘기계를 멈추자, 노동시간단축을 위한 투쟁을 조직하자, 만국의 노동자가 단결하여 노동자의 권리쟁취를 위해 동맹파업을 하자’는 3가지 결의를 실천하는 날로 선언하였다. 이를 계기로 1890년 5월 1일 ‘만국의 노동자여 단결하라’고 외치며 각국의 사정에 맞게 첫 메이데이 대회가 개최되었고 지금까지 전 세계적으로 노동자의 연대와 단결을 과시하는 날로 기념해오고 있다.

이후 각 나라의 상황에 따라 미국과 캐나다에서는 9월 첫째 월요일, 뉴질랜드는 10월 넷째 월요일, 일본은 11월 23일, 유럽·중국·러시아 등에서는 5월 1일을 노동절로 기념하고 있다.
