왜 영어를 알아야만 하는가? / Why Learn English?

첫글을 뭘로 할까 생각하다 예전에 Medium에 써놓은게 있어서 먼저 옮겨봅니다.
영어가 중요한건 알겠는데 수치적으로 얼마나 중요한지 좀 더 실감할 수 있게 알아봤습니다.

This is my first post after introducing myself in Korean.
Everyone knows learning English is so important. This will describe how important it is especially with figures.

한국인 분들에게 (Only to Koreans):
우리가 운동의 중요성을 잘 알면서도 막상 실천에 옮기기가 쉽지 않듯이 영어 또한 마찬가지임을 알고 있습니다. 중요한지 몰라서가 아니라 시도 자체가 너무 힘이들죠. 그래서 이런 글이 오히려 부담이 되지는 않을까 하는 염려가 앞섭니다.
그래도 요즘은 구글번역기도 있고해서 영어를 잘 몰라도 어느 정도는 소통을 할 수 있는 좋은 시대이며, 영어가 인생의 전부가 아닌게 당연한만큼 부담감을 내려 놓으시고 가벼운 마음으로 읽어주시면 감사하겠습니다.
앞으로는 실질적인 영어공부 방법에 대해서도 종종 찾아뵙겠습니다. 미리 감사드립니다.

Why are you learning English? No matter what reasons you have, no doubt that English is an excellent tool for communication over a billion people.

본문에 있는 통계 숫자들은 시간에 따라 변하겠지만, '글로벌' 언어임이 분명해진 영어의 중요성 만큼은 약해지지 않으리라 확신합니다.

By the way, all the numbers below are likely to change as time goes by, but we can easily guess the importance of English would never become weaker than now as English does seem to be the de facto ‘global’ language.

I will also compare the figures of English to those of Korean as an example, to maximize emphasizing the importance of learning English, since I am originally from Korea. So, please forgive me for not doing the same things for your language.

영어 사용자(10억1천만명)는 한국어 사용자(7천7백만명)의 약 13배.
- 영어 사용자(10억1천만명) = 원어민(5억명) + 제2언어로 사용자(5억1천만명)
한국어를 제2언어로 구사하는 사람들 통계치가 나오지 않았는데, 있다고 할지라도 많지않아 통계에 미미한 영향을 줄거라고 추측합니다.

The number of English speakers (1010 million) is about 13 times more than Korean speakers (77 million).
- English speakers (1010 million) = native speakers (500 million) + second language speakers (510 million)
Korean speakers does not contain second language speakers in the list. I assume that it is because there might not be many Korean learners over the world to affect the statistics.

EFL(본국에서 영어를 배우는 사람들)까지 고려하면 영어사용자와 한국어사용자의 비율은 20% 더 증가합니다.

When we also consider EFL (English as a foreign language) learners, the difference increases by about 20% as below.

ESL vs EFL

ESL(English as a second language)이란 영어권 국가에서 제2외국어로 영어를 익히는 사람들을 뜻합니다. (예: 한국 학생이 아일랜드에서 영어를 배우는 경우)
EFL (English as a foreign language)이란 비영어권 국가에서 제2외국어로 영어를 익히는 사람들을 뜻합니다. (예: 한국 학생이 한국 학원에서 영어를 배우는 경우)

ESL (English as a second language) is used for non-native English speakers learning English in a country where English is commonly spoken. (e.g. a Korean student who is learning English in an English school in Ireland)
EFL (English as a foreign language) is used for non-native English speakers learning English in a country where English is not commonly spoken. (e.g. a Korean student who is learning English in an English school in Korea)

국가별 영어사용 인구 / List of countries by English-speaking population

전세계적으로 영어 사용자는 약 12억명으로 집계되어집니다. 원어민이 약 3억5천명임을 감안할때, 약 8억5천명에 가까운 사람들이 제2 혹은 제3의 언어로 영어를 사용하고 있습니다.
- 위에서 원어민이 5억명이라고 했는데 여기선 3억5천이라고 나와있습니다. 1년전에 Medium에 글을 쓸때는 거의 일치를 했었는데, 위쪽의 통계만 업데이트 되다보니 현재 전혀 일치하지 않습니다. 둘다 최근 통계자료를 찾지 못해 일단 그냥 넘어가도록 하겠으니 양해 바랍니다.
EFL 포함 영어 사용자(12억)는 한국어 사용자(7천7백만)의 16배.

The total number of English speakers in the world adds up to around 1,200,000,000. Likewise, the total number of native English speakers adds up to around 350,000,000. This implies that there are approximately 850,000,000 people who speak English as an additional language.
- You might notice that the figure of native speakers here (350 million) and the one above (500 million) do not match at all. These were similar when I originally posted the same contents on Medium a year ago. The page 'Lists of languages by their number of speakers' has been updated since then but 'List of countries by English-speaking population' has not. I know the difference is huge but let us move on since I could not find other up-to-date statistics for both on the Internet.
The number of English speakers (1.2 billion) including EFL is about 16 times more than Korean speakers (77 million).

웹 컨텐츠 기준으로 하면 이 비율은 엄청나게 증가합니다.

The difference dramatically increases even much more when it comes to website contents.

보시다시피, 2017년 7월 7일 기준으로 인터넷의 모든 웹사이트들의 절반 이상이 영어로 쓰여져 있습니다.
이 기준으로 하자면 한국어(0.9%)와 영어(51.4%)는 무려 60배 가까이 차이가 납니다.

As you see, more than half of website contents (51.4%, 6 July 2017) on the Internet is written in English.
English contents (51.4%) is almost 60 times more than Korean contents (0.9%) on the Internet.

위의 자료들이 보여주듯이 영어를 원활히 하지 못하는 경우 얻는 불이익이 너무 큽니다. 특히 같은 직종에서 비슷한 수준의 경쟁자인데 단지 나와 다른점은 영어를 잘 하는거 하나뿐인 경우를 상상해보면 더욱 이해하기 쉽습니다. 아니면 억울하게도 영어 원어민이거나.
요즘은 대부분의 자료 접근을 인터넷에서 하는만큼 자료 접근의 편의성 측면만 본다면 그 경쟁자와 60배나 가까이 차이가 납니다. 실질적인 의사소통 가능 여부에 대한 차이점은 말할것도 없습니다.

All the statistics so far are shown that not having English skills could give you a huge disadvantage, comparing to your competitors who are in the same working industry and also can do English well enough. Simply put, you are losing your competitiveness just because you are giving up learning English. The amount of information that you and your rival can access is almost 60 times different (for Koreans here), considering almost all of us heavily rely on the Internet. Let alone difference of communication ability.

다시말해서, 영어를 잘하면 좋은게 문제가 아니라 영어를 잘 못할때의 불이익을 줄이기 위해 영어를 배워야 합니다.

Again, you should learn English not only because it is just cool to do, but also because you are likely to be falling behind with missing a lot of valuable information your rival James can quickly access unless you are still cool with that.

'나는 아직 영어때문에 딱히 불이익 받아본적 없는데?'라고 하시는 분이 계실지 모르나 안타깝게도 머지않아 그 날이 올거라 확신합니다.

I know you might have never come across any unfair situations yet due to lack of your ability in English. But I am pretty sure that the time will be coming soon, especially as you get older and hope to be promoted in your working area.

쉽지는 않겠으나 포기하지 않고 학습을 지속하는 한 영어가 인생의 전환점을 가져다줄 좋은 재료가 될것입니다.

English will turn your life totally around as far as you keep trying to improve it. It requires a great deal of patience, but efforts never betray you.
