9 out of 10 South Koreans live in cities

Nine out of ten South Koreans live in cities representing only 17 percent of the total national territory last year, the Ministry of Transport said on Tuesday.
In 2016, 47.47 million people, or 91.8% of the country's 51.7 million people, live in Seoul and other cities, according to data from the Ministry of Lands, Infrastructure and transport.
According to the statement, the areas classified as 17,609.5 square meters, or 16.6 percent of the total land area of 106,059.8 square meters last year.
The proportion of urban dwellers has continued to rise in the past decades as people move to cities as people moved to the cities for better education and job creation.
This percentage rose from 39% in 1960 to 50% in 1970, 70% in 1980, 80% in 1990 and 90% in 2000.
