Senior & Junior

이번표현들이 되게 중요해요. 왜 중요하냐면 서양과 한국의 문화 차이가 너무 커서 한국에서만 쓰는 표현들을 영어로 해석하는게 좀 어색하고 느낌도 너무 다릅니다. 한국사람들이"선배와 후배" 같은 표현들을 옛날부터 서로 불렀죠. 근데 이런표현들을 영어로 말하려면 표현이 따로 없습니다.

그래서 단어씩 해석하는것보다 뉘앙스를 잘 알아야돼요.

예를 들면

A(Andrew): Who is that person that greeted you?

B(Korean): He is a senior in my university.

A(Andrew): Senior?

B(Korean): .....(confused face)...he is an "elder" student.

이런 상황이 꽤 많았어요.

솔직히 제가 올바른 표현을 제대로 가르치고 한국사람들이 선후배문화가 서양에서 없다고 인정해도 항상 까먹더라고요. 왜냐하면 그 문화차이가 너무 커서 기억하기 어렵네요~

선배와 후배라는 표현을 언제 사용하는지 아시죠?

a와b의 대화를 살펴보기전에 senior과 junior가 영어와 한국어로 무슨 뜻인지 알아보겠죠^^

한국어로는?

senior= 선배
junior=후배

영어로는?

senior= 윗사람, 나이많으신분, 이름 이세, 직위 (senior sales manager, senior advisor *이런 직위들이 그냥 명함이나 구인광고에 써있는 단어들입니다. 대화할때 거의 안 쓰죠)

junior= 이름 이세 (Andrew Jr, Ken Griffin Jr 거의 안 씀), 어린이 운동경기 (junior hockey, junior soccer 등등), 영어 이름

a와 b의 대화를 살펴보겠죠

A(Andrew): What did you do after work?
B(Korean): I went to a company dinner with my seniors.
A(Andrew): Your company is full of old people? Why are you mentioning seniors?
B(Korean): They are my coworkers but more experience than me.
A(Andrew): Ah...We don't have that kind of system in English. We just call them coworkers.
B(Korean): Really?..ok. I had a company dinner with my coworkers.
A(Andrew): Alright. Sounds more natural.

A: Are you enjoying your job?
B: It's so so..I manage a team of 5 people. They are my juniors?
A: Are they kids?
B: No. They are young employees.
A: We don't express young employees as juniors. We just call them new employees.
B: I see. They are new employees but they are having a difficult time adjusting to the new work environment.

A: Are we going to meet our seniors and juniors after class is done?
B: We will not meet our seniors and juniors.
A: Why?
B: Because they aren't seniors and juniors. They are our schoolmates.
A: Right. I forgot I am so Korean.
B: That's ok. Let's meet them after class.

결론,

영어로 말할때 선후배문화가 없어서 한국사람들이 표현하는 걸 절대 안 합니다.

여러분들이 한국말로 할때 선배와 후배라고 불러도되는데 영어로는 안 하길 바랍니다
