[Restaurant_Seoul] Badasikdang 이태원 바다식당(존슨탕)

Budae-jjigae(literally "army base stew") is a Korean style stew made normally with ham, sausage, baked beans, kimchi and other vegetables. It was created after the Korean War using the scrounged or smuggled surplus foods from the U. S. army bases - people were starved to death this time. So, basically this dish has got a sad history for Korean people.

Bada-sikdang(literally "Sea restaurant") is one of the most famous restaurants for budaejjigae, but they use a different name, called Johnson-tang(Johnson stew). I guess they wanted it to imply the meaning of it and sound funnier. I think it succeeded as people like calling its name. I like it as well. As well as the name, the ingredients in Johnson-tang are a little bit different from normal budaejjigae. It does not have baked beans, but lots of cabbage, onion and cheese. Because of that, it tastes sweeter so women and children love it so much.

Its location is very good too, next to Itaewon - famous for foreign foods, bars and clubs for young people. After having a meal here, you can go to Itaewon to enjoy a nightlife at one of the hottest places in Seoul.

아는 사람은 다 아는 이태원 존슨탕. 처음엔 이름이 뭐 이래? 하겠지만, 먹고 나면 아 '존슨탕'이구나 하게된다. 일반적으로 접할 수 있는 부대찌게랑은 확실히 다른 맛이다. 일단 비주얼부터 다른데, 푸짐해 보이지 않고 빈한 느낌, 치즈라면인가 싶은 비주얼이다. [다른데는 소세지와 떡사리 라면이 푸짐하게 들어가있는데 말이다!] 치즈를 저어서 녹이지 않고, 모양 그대로 한국자 푹 떠서 담는다. 파를 한 올 올려서 한입 떠먹는다. 적당히 따땃한게 달짝지근하다. 치즈때문에 고소한 맛이 올라온다. 맛있다. 밥과 함께 바닥까지 싹싹 긁어먹는다. 다른 부대찌게보다 빈한게 아니라 이건 그냥 존슨탕이었던 것이다. 양배추가 많이 들어가서 달짝지근한 맛을 내는데, 얼큰한 부대찌게 맛을 기대한 사람들에게는 다소 실망스러울지도 모르겠다. 하지만, 여자와 어린 아이, 외국인 취향저격에는 실패하지 않을 것 같다. 부대찌게라고 생각하지 않고 아예 다른 음식이라고 생각하는 편이 나을 것 같다. 어쨋든, 난 중독적인 존슨탕이 맛있고 좋다.
