[스트레인저 댄 픽션]은 내 인생의 1번 영화다. 너무 좋은 영화를 보면 뭐라고 이야기해야 할 지를 잘 모르겠다. 그냥 보는 걸 추천하지만 그래도 왜 추천하는 지 이유를 써 보려 한다.

Stranger than Fiction is the number one movie in my life. I don't know how to recommend when I watch a really good movie. I would rather write like just look at it, but I would like to write why I recommend it.

[스트레인저 댄 픽션]은 한국에서 개봉하지 않아서 제목도 번역이 안 되어 있다. 대충 번역해보자면 '소설보다 더 이상한' 정도가 될 것이다. 뭐가 소설보다 더 이상한지는 영화를 보시면 알 수 있다. 영화를 보고나면 네이밍부터 적절했다는 걸 느낄 수 있다.

Stranger than Fiction has not even translated its title since it was not released in Korea. The rough translation would be "More weird than a novel". What is more than a novel can be found in the movies. After watching the movie, you can feel that it was relevant from the beginning.

이 영화는 재밌다. 문자 그대로 재미있다. 메시지를 담은 영화들이 메시지에 집중하느라 재미를 놓치기 마련인데 이 영화는 그냥 편하게 봐도 충분히 재밌다. 예술영화나 독립영화처럼 메시지를 꽁꽁 숨겨놓아서 관객들이 피곤해야 좋은 영화라고 생각하는지도 모르겠다. 전문가들만 읽을 수 있게 만들어서 어떤 특권의식을 갖고 싶어하는 건지도 모르겠다. 아무튼 이 영화는 독립영화도, 예술영화도 아니고 메시지를 찾기 위해 혈안이 되어서 장면 장면을 해석하며 보지 않아도 된다. 그냥 보면 각자 느끼는 게 있다. 특히 보는 사람마다 느끼는 점이 다르기도 해서 여러명이 보고 함께 이야기하기에도 좋다.

This movie is interesting. literally interesting. Movies with messages tend to be so focused on the messages that they lose interest, but it is fun enough to just watch it comfortably. You might think it is a good movie only if the audience is tired because of its hidden messages like an art movie or an independent movie. I don't know what kind of privilege they want to have by making it accessible only to experts. After all, it is not an independent film or an art film, and you don't have to look at it interpreting the scenes as you are desperate to find the message. There is something to be felt in person. In particular, it is a good movie for many people to see and talk with because it makes a difference in how people feel.

좋은 영화는 보고 나서 캐릭터가 다 기억에 남는 다고 했는데, 그 기준으로 봤을 때 이 영화는 완벽하다. 헤럴드 크릭을 연기한 윌 퍼렐은 기억에 남는 배우는 아니다. 실제로 처음 봤을 땐 누군지도 몰랐고. 잘생기지 않았고 특별히 개성있는 얼굴도 아닌 그냥 아저씨 같다(그래서 더 몰입이 잘 되는지도 모르겠다). 근데 그 매력에 점점 빠져들고 영화가 끝날 때엔 어느새 그를 응원하고 있는 나를 발견할 수 있다. 허스키한 목소리를 싫어하는 필자도 빠져들 수 밖에 없는 매기 질렌할과 저음 발성으로 빠르게 발음하는 더스틴 호프만도 각자 주조연의 역할을 충실히 했다.

Someone said that after watching a good movie, all of the characters are memorable, by that, this movie is perfect. Will Ferrell, who plays Herold Crick, is not a memorable actor. I didn't even know who it was the first time I saw it. He is not handsome and looks like an uncle, not a particularly individual face. But as I gradually fall into the charm, I find myself cheering for him at the end of the movie. I, who don't like husky voice, can't stop falling Maggie Gyllenhaal's charming. And Dustin Hoffman, who makes rapid pronunciations with low-voice vocalization, also performed their roles perfectly.

그리고 군계일학(다른 배우들을 닭으로 비유해서 죄송합니다만)은 엠마 톰슨이다. 이렇게 카리스마 넘치고 작가의 히스테리를 보여주는 동시에 고뇌하는 모습으로 한없이 연민하게 하는 연기는 그녀가 아닌 다른 사람이 할 수 없었을 것이다.

And the only figure among ciphers, the sun among inferior lights (I'm sorry to compare the other actors to the inferior lights) is Emma Thompson. No one else could have done the charismatic acting that showed such a charismatic writer's hysteria, but also caused her to pity her for the agony she caused.

스토리도 더할 나위 없이 좋다. 어떤 영화들은 클리셰 때문에 지루하게 느껴지기도 하는데 클리셰 자체는 부정적인 것도 긍정적인 것도 아니다. 쓰기 나름이다. 이 영화를 보면 클리셰는 어떻게 써야하는 건지 알 수 있다. "지루하고 매일 똑같은 하루하루를 살던 주인공이 어떤 계기로 즐거운 삶을 살아가는" 뻔한 클리셰를 다이나믹하게 변주한다. 클리셰를 통해 안정감을 주는 동시에 변주를 통해 신선함을 준다.

The story is perfectly good. Some movies are boring because of the cliché, but the cliché itself is neither negative nor positive. It depends on the use. The film shows how cliché should use : "A dynamic one, where the main character, who used to live the same boring day to day, lives pleasantly with a variation." It gives you a sense of stability through the cliché while also giving you freshness through the variation.

심지어 영상도 예쁘다. 음악도 좋고. 빠지는 게 없다. 이제 보면 된다. 구구절절 이야기할 필요없었는데 굳이 또 이렇게 쓰는 건 정말 좋았기 때문이다. 꾸준히 꺼내보다보니 10번 넘게 봤다. 강력하게 추천한다.

Even the video is pretty. Music is good. Now you can see it. I didn't have to talk about it this much, but I write this because this is so nice. I've watched over 10 times. Strongly recommendation.
