Waiheke Island around Auckland (1/3)

in #kr7 years ago (edited)

Hi, guys. I am kiwifruit♥ living in Auckland, NewZealand.
Today, I am going to post about Waiheke Island, not really far from Auckland CBD but beautiful and allowing us to enjoy untouched nature escaping from city life.

Before I became a university student, I had a bit of difficulties with my financial and I made quite a lot of efforts to earn and save money for my future university tuition fee. I tried to save much money by haivng 3 different kinds of jobs simultaneously and I could find my only fun in my life by looking at the numbers in my bank account. That was it. It was one day in December and I suddenly felt that it would probably become a waste of my youth if I only spent my time to earn money and go to the university. So, I decided to leave by myself and have a short trip to somewhere not Auckland city during the Christmas holiday season.

If it was too long, I was sure that would give too much pressure to myself. So, I decided to come back within 3 days. I googled to find out pretty cheap place to stay and there was a good priced backpacker named Hekerua lodge. A week before the Christmas, I luckily made a booking and on 23rd of December 2013, I made my first step to start a little adventure.

The fare was 18 NZD one way. Returning ticket was 34 NZD. Nowadays, we can use AT HOP card to ride ferry, bus and trains but those days, I needed to buy a ticket to get on the ferry. I, a clumsy girl, carefully put my returning ticket in my wallet and finally put my feet on the island.

Waiheke wine is quite famous in New Zealand. Maybe that's why I could see so many vinyards in Waiheke.

Also, Waiheke is well-known as the island of artists. There was an art gallary, not very far from the entrance of the village. I was not allowed to take a photo, so I do not have any picture to show you inside the gallary. But I remember there were lots of beautiful tiny statues and pretty paintings.

After I enjoyed the art gallary, I walked an unknown street until I found a beach. There was a small town with some little houses and down there, it was a quiet, mini-sized beach right in front of me.

Because I still got my luggages, I couldn't get straight into the beach though I was really craving for it. But instead, I was lying down under the cool, dark shade of a big tree and spending some peaceful time.

After little bit of slacking, I got my luggage on my one hand and my back, my phone with Google maps on my other hand and looked for the backpackers while I was walking the street for about an half an hour. Then, finally, I met welcoming street sign.

The place that I booked was located on this street, Hekerua Road. I was very delighted since I was looking for this road for ages (although I got my Google map on my hand haha) on the countryside roads where even tracks for pedestrians (walking travelers like me) were not prepared.

Eventually, I got this sign with huge size of name of the place that I was looking for.

There was also a cute post box right nearby the sign.

Following this narrow track in the forest, I found out a cottage like housing. Yeah, that was the place.

Just by looking at beach towels and swimsuits on the table and chairs, I could assume that people staying here were all big fan of swimming at the beach.

I booked ladies-only-room. It was 17ish NZD per night if I correctly remember. It was apparently very cheap considering that it was holiday season and I made a booking right before the holiday. The rooms with boys and girls were 2 dollars cheaper than ladies-only-rooms. The top bed was where I slept while I was staying. The room was tidy and cozy.

There were one German girl and two Australian girls. The German girl was using the top bed, opposite side of my bed, but I think she felt hot and she opened the window while everyone was sleeping. Of course, there was no net on the windows... LOL
And yeah, I got tens of mosquito bites on my face during whole holidays. I scratched my face all the time haha walking streets with my swollen eyes and cheeks.
Apart from that everyone was very kind and friendly. They all visited Waiheke for their holidays just like me.

After I left my luggages in my room, I went out to buy some grocery for dinner. It was Saturday and there was a small market run by people living in Waiheke. People sold gorgeous small statues and arts that they hand-made, vegetables they raised from their garden and some foods that they cooked as customers ordered. Everything was so interesting to me since it's been a long time that I went to Saturday/Sunday market.

For lunch, I had a Hungarian style meal. The bread was deep fried with cotta cheese, pesto and chopped tomatoes on the top. I can't remember how it was called. I usually have Asian foods for my meals but yeah it was very interesting and impressive experience. It was pretty tasty.

I went out to the beach around evening and put my feet in the sea water. I hoped I could swim but I was quite tired since I walked a lot that day.
Well, my whole trip was 3 days and 2 nights. So, for the remaining 2 days, I will write them into 2 separate posts.
Thanks for reading this story :D If you liked it, please follow me for more! :P

Work/life balance is always important, so I hope you had fun.

Yeah you are definitely right. Those days, I was YOUNG and quite energetic so I thought I could handle 3 works at the same time. Indeed, I was sick all the time hahaha.
Thanks it was one of the happiest moment in my whole life :D
