If something is done with no holds barred, it's done without restriction, rules or restraint.
어떤 일이 no holds barred로 이뤄진다면, 제약, 규칙, 규제 없이 일이 일어난다는 것을 의미합니다.
For example:
- The final game was played with no holds barred. It was very rough football and the referee had a hard time keeping control of things.
최종 결선은 모든 수단을 동원하여 치뤄졌습니다. 정말 힘든 풋볼 경기였고, 심판은 경기를 통제하느라 힘든 시간을 보냈습니다. - The election campaign turned into a no-holds-barred battle with each candidate trying to find information with which to damage their opponent's reputation.
선거 운동이 모든 수단을 동원하는 전투가 되었고, 각 후보자들은 상대방의 명성에 해를 끼칠 수 있는 것이 무엇인지 정보를 찾는데 열을 세우고 있었습니다.

If this idiom is used before a noun, hypens should be added, as in "a no-holds-barred contest"
만약 이 숙어가 명사 앞에서 쓰인다면, 반드시 하이픈을 추가하세요. "a no-holds-barred contest" 처럼요.
The origin of this idiom
From the sport of wrestling, in which certain dangerous holds are not usually allowed. But if wrestlers are in a no-holds-barred contest, there are no restrictions and they can use whatever holds they like.
스포츠 레슬링에서. 특정 위험한 홀드들이 허용되지 않습니다. 하지만, 레슬러가 'a no-holds-barred contest'에 있다면, 그들이 좋아하는 어떠한 형태의 홀드를 걸어도 상관없습니다.

사전을 찾아보니 '어떤 제약도 없이[모든 수단을 동원하여]'라고 나오네요 ㅎㅎ 뭔가 강력한 뜻을 가진 단어네요 ㅎㅎ

레슬링 지식이 없어서 그런데, 레슬링에서
hold와bar의 뜻은 뭘까요?hold는 잡기 기술을 말하고, bar는 레슬링이랑 상관없이 우리가 일반적으로 생각하는 '바' (빗장)입니다. barred 되어 있다는 빗장이 걸려있다는 뜻입니다. barred 를 blocked와 같은 느낌으로 받아들이셔도 됩니다.
with no holds barred 는 어떠한 holds도 barred되어 있지 않다. 즉 어떠한 홀드도 제약이 걸려 있지 않다. 즉 어떠한 수단을 써도 상관없다는 뜻이 됩니다.
사실 저도 레슬링 자체에 대해서는 잘 모릅니다만, 홀드 자체가 쉽게 허락되지 않는 수단 중 하나라고 보시면 이해하기 더 쉬우실 겁니다.
