[Idiom of the day] Hit the hay / Hit the sack
요즘 전화영어 + 개인적으로 영어 공부를 계속 하고 있는데, 제가 하는 전화영어에서 하루마다 하나씩 Idiom of the day를 전달해준답니다. 그 표현들을 제가 직접 쓰면서 영어 공부도 할 겸 글을 써볼려고 해요.

오늘 소개할 Idiom 은
입니다. If you hit the hay, or hit the sack, you go to bed.
잠을 자러 갈 때 우리는 hit the hay / hit the sack 과 같은 표현을 씁니다.

For example:
- It's after midnight so it's time I hit the hay.

엄청 피곤해 보이는데, 어제 몇시에 잤니?
Origin: Probably related to the fact that in the U.S.A in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century mattresses often consisted of old sacks filled with hay or straw.
19세기 후반과 20세기 초반의 미국에서는 매트리스가 건초와 짚으로 채워진 오래된 마대들로 매트리스를 만들어 썼습니다. 이러한 사실 때문에 hit the hay / hit the sack 이라는 표현이 등장하게 되었습니다.
Variety: This idiom is typically used in American English but may be used in other varieties of English too.
