[기사] 2021.03.04 Lectures highlight Buddhist linkage between India, Korea

A series of online lectures last week highlighted the shared Buddhist cultural heritage between India and Korea, looking at Buddhist scriptures, literature, philosophy and meditation practices.

Titled "Buddhist Legacy and India," the lectures were co-organized by the Embassy of India in Korea and the Indian Cultural Centre, in cooperation with the College of Buddhist Studies and Culture at Dongguk University, from Feb. 22 to 26.

Among the participants were Indian Ambassador to Korea Sripriya Ranganathan and professors from the university.

"The origin and spread of Buddhism has been a landmark achievement in the history of Greater India and it has left an indelible mark of the cultural history of India over the world," the Indian Cultural Centre said in a statement. It added that the online lecture series was held to keep in contact with India cultural enthusiasts in Korea amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In her opening address, Ambassador Ranganathan focused 'on various aspects of Buddhism and the deep-rooted connections between the two countries.

Ven. Beopjin talked about developing various means of preserving the teachings of Buddha and how Buddhist scriptures and literature were spread to Korea.

Professor Kim Kyung-rae spoke about Abhidhamma, the first philosophical tradition in the history of Indian Buddhism.

Professor Moon Hyun-gong gave a lecture on Buddhist meditation and encouraged participants to "live the present moment" faithfully.

Ven. Chungduk talked about the sacred narratives that played a critical role in the growth, evolution and spread of Buddhism and its localization in different countries.

He also underlined the importance of interpreting Buddhist scripture from a more diverse perspective.

Professor Hwang Soon-il explained how maritime trade was essential in spreading Buddhism from India to East Asia and Southeast Asia.

The Indian Cultural Centre opened online classes, March 1, on Bollywood movies, Hindi songs, Indian folk dance and Kathak, one of major classical dances found primarily in northern India.
