Cherished Culture #1 - The World's 2nd Steemiest Place, Korea's Communal Saunas 찜질방steemCreated with Sketch.

It snowed last week in New York for the first time this season and it made me long for one of my favorite places in the world- Korean Saunas! Today I'll explore the diverse offerings so idiosyncratic to Korean life and hopefully it will encourage you to take a dip sometime (there are many in Los Angeles and a few on the American east coast).

  • Real Safe Spaces in South Korea

Who cares? There are saunas in every country...

True, BUT there's nothing quite like what you get in virtually every neighborhood of Korea. Saunas in Korea are much more than simple spas or public pools, they're a way of life – the perfect place to spend a day with the family, catch some shut-eye with friends after a night of drinking, and take date in a country where privacy of any kind comes at a premium.

To give a bit of a walkthrough, here is the typical rundown when experiencing a sauna.
1- In the lobby pay for a day pass, receive a locker key, scuttle off to either the Men's or Women's locker rooms, and prepare for several hours of relaxation.

2- Before anything else, you must rinse yourself off in a shower and spend some time in the steam rooms and heated pools. There are TVs to watch and even a masseuse that can give you a quick table scrub and get rid of your city grime.

3- Back in the locker room, dawn your spa uniform, and make your way to the communal area

4- From the communal area there are tons of things to do. You can spend some time in salt or steam rooms, grab a meal at the food court, watch a movie or tv in the lounge areas, or even grab a refreshing beer.

Liberating Yourself

From an architectural standpoint, Korean spas as designed with a focus on communal activity and sharing. The main hall is very spacious with mats that you can grab and place anywhere.

Personally, I love them for the way it makes everyone equal. Korea is notorious for being one of the most “well-tailored” countries in Asia or even the world and you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone in a simple pair of shorts and a t-shirt. Flawless make-up and fitted suits are a given in downtown Seoul and it's such a revitalizing sight to see people let their hair down, kick off the uncomfortable shoes, and indulge in a simple pleasure that everyone in the country enjoys.

These places are typically open 24/7 and I've spent many a late night in these places with both family and friends. They're perfect all year around for sweating off stress and having some fun!
