As many of us know by know, South Korean officials have been making statements on banning cryptocurrencies about three days ago. Since there has been speculation and insecurity over these statements and what is about to come. A lot of experts believe that the plunge in cryptocurrencies during the last few days is attributable to these statements or at least to peoples’ interpretation of them.
At first, the media´s coverage and analyzes on these statements were perhaps not so objective and analytical. The undertone was often that we will see an outright ban altogether on cryptocurrency exchanges in South Korea. The very next day we saw a clarification from the South Korean government and that it might be that an outright ban is still an option, but I think they are making it clear that what they are after is regulating the cryptocurrency market, not banning it. One such regulation could be a requirement of the use of real names on accounts and levying taxes on cryptocurrency trading. It also needs to be understood in terms of making efforts against money laundering and similar crimes.
