Taepyeongi, the national flag of Korea, is composed of four trigrams, including taegeuk patterns in the middle of a white background and gulgon surveillance in four corners.
The white background of the Taegeukgi symbolizes brightness, purity, and our traditional peace-loving ethnicity. The taegeuk mark in the middle represents the harmony between yin and yang, which is the embodiment of Mother Nature's truth that the universe is created and developed by the interaction of yin and yang.
The four trigrams at the four corners are a combination of hyo (eum : Mmmm --, ―) to describe the change in yin and yang between them. Among them, gunggue (乾 卦) stands for heaven, gonggwae (坤) for earth, gamjae (坎) for water, and yigwae (離) for fire. The four trigrams are composed of taegeuk, or taegeuk, and thus, unification.
