I don't feel like the komodo team does a great job of explaining the project and it's necessity. Crypto people like you and I understand the need for decentralized exchanges and atomic swaps, but not everyone does, and those two things don't necessarily need to have a token either.
KMD definitely could improve marketing their coin. Atomic swaps are not even going to be around for months and months as the lightning network is set up.... very slowly set up......
