              Scorpions really are the most remarkable animals.When the French were testing nuclear weapons in the Sahara,the scorpions were able to withstand the most radiation.They can live through the oldest extremes.A scorpion can survive in the hottest desert,or being frozen in a block of ice.It can do without water for three months,and if it has to it can manage without anything to eat for a year.When it does get a chance to feed it will make a real pig of itself,unlike a spider which will only eat what it needs.
               The fascinating arrachnids are very sensitive to vibrations.They have hairs on their claws that can detect tiny vibrations in the air,and other  organs on the underside of their bodies that pick up vibration from the ground , and apparently chemical signals as well.It is this awareness of vibration that is responsible for the fact that they are not easy to see in the wild.As soon as a greater big heavy human starts clomping about near them , they vanish into the nearest hole , and you would be astonished at what a tiny crack they can disappear into.
                There certainly are scorpions that cause concern , and one of the most venomous is the African Fat-tailed Scorpion, (Androctonus australis).The enormous Emperor Scorpion,(Pandinus imperator),from West Africa is black and looms evil,but is a gentle animal and most relucant to do any harm. The Trinidad Scorpion , (Tityus trinitatis) ,is an animal that has been responsible for a number of human deaths.
               The largest scorpion in the world is (Heterometrus swannerdami) from Imdia.A male can well be over 18 cm (7in) and the largest ever recorded is at the Bombay Natural History Society. It measures 24.7 cm (9.75in), and though this is pretty massive it does not mean that it is necessarily dangerous.
               The African Gold Scorpion is extremenly venomous, but the amount that is injected though Gold Scorpions do not cause death in adults , the symptomas are still most unpleasant. The neurotoxic vemon causes a tightness of the thorat, slurred speech,restlessness, sweating and vomiting , and blueing of the lips and other tissues.
