Yarn 101 #2: Slub Yarn - the perfect effect yarn for knitting and crochet (DIY Tutorial)

in #knitting7 years ago (edited)

Dear Knitters and Crocheters,

Today, we are dealing with slub yarn.

This is an effect yarn which has elongated thickenings and thinnings at regular or irregular intervals. This creates a beautiful effect that resembles a flame. The elongation of different colors is also used with this effect yarn.

The thickening of the thread occurs during the spinning or twisting of the yarn by different spinning methods. The stitch pattern has a natural, irregular look.

In order to achieve this effect as best as possible, the needle size must not be too thin or too thick. I recommend that you test the wool with different needle sizes to achieve the desired pattern. The indication on the banderole gives a good indication of the correct needle size.

If you choose an average needle size (not too thin or too thick), the knitting pattern should look like this:

This is how the same knitting pattern looks like when the used needle is too thin:

You can, of course, choose a too thin needle, but you should note that the knitting process itself will become very troublesome and laborious. In addition, a regular way of knitting must be ensured, i.e. avoid pulling the yarn at thinnings. That would also create a nice effect (photo), but knitting becomes more and more stressful. I know what I'm talking about ;)

There are slub yarns in many different colors and fiber types, e.g. viscose, wool and cotton. I've also seen self-striping wool as a slub yarn. I found this outstanding. Not only hand-knitted wool is available, but also cone yarn for the knitting machine is produced as slub yarn.

Slub yarn is not only used in knitting and crochet. Also woven fabrics such as carpets and clothing fabrics have these beautiful structures and coloring games.

I like slub yarn very much. It requires some practice at the beginning, until you know how to knit a regular way. But the effect is unbeatable, especially when color gradients are added. In addition, you can knit this effect yarn without doing anything for getting an effect, e.g. changing colors, use different needles, carry several threads at the same time, etc.

The maintenance for the yarn depends on the fiber type. I will explain you how to take care of the different yarns in the next articles of the series "Yarn 101"!.
