KMA TRAINING ON BUSINESS MANAGEMENT.
Doctors get into business to grow both financially and career wise. It is every doctors wish to earn extra income from the skills they have. This would however be impossible if one doesn’t have the necessary skills to manage their business.
KMA Membership Committee in Nairobi Division, conducted a survey in June 2018 under Chairmanship of Dr. Macharia Waruingi of Ubrica, Convener of Membership Committee, Media Outreach Committee and Medical Camps Committee, Nairobi Division, KMA. Preliminary results of the survey show various concerns raised by the doctors who participated. One of the concerns raised was that KMA should come up with ways of educating doctors on business management.
In our society today, most doctors have ventured into different businesses (e.g., private hospitals, clinics, real estates, etc.). From the survey, majority of the doctors who participated in the survey suggested that they should be educated about finance. Apart from the Continuous Professional Development programs, KMA can assist doctors in career growth and development through trainings on business management. This will enable doctors, especially those in private practice, to manage their clinics, consultancies and other businesses. Doctors will also know how to handle and save cash.
Doctors gave several ideas regarding business management:
KMA should be holding more seminars for business training. This should include business orientation targeting doctors early on their career. The trainings should also involve giving advice to doctors on the best businesses they can venture into.
KMA to facilitate capital for startups and business growth. This should be done without being biased and without looking at status quo.
KMA should provide a flexible loan facility that offers loans at affordable interest rates.
KMA should negotiate with financial institutions on favorable medical financing packages for its members.
KMA should create workshops and training seminars on management of private enterprises.
KMA should advocate for more conducive environment for business for doctor.
KMA has a SACCO where members can save and also get loans. The SACCO has been of benefit to many doctors and KMA should create awareness to medics about the products offered by the SACCO.
