And So By Degrees, Proceeding To The Worst (An Epic of Guy Fawkes) - Killer Poetry Contest Entry!steemCreated with Sketch.

in #killerpoetry7 years ago (edited)

A man called forth by conscience clear
Gave his life for a faith in fear
In a time of renegades switching sides
And faith polluted with blood and lies
Thirteen men all true of heart
Each stepped forth to play their part
Their lives they pledged without qualms
As each man vowed to take up arms
‘Gainst king and country they steeled their will
And from secret rooms came a plot to kill
No more priests hiding in cubby holes
And Christians fearing their mortal souls
These men declared no more say I
Sealing their fate as condemned to die
They spread the word through the brave and true
And over the ocean gunpowder flew
It found its way through young and old
To wait in a cellar damp and cold
But fortune did not smile that day
And the gunpowder barrels began to decay
So once again they risked their lives
To ensure their deadly plot survives
They restocked their barrels and awaited the day
But a fateful letter gave the whole thing away
Guy Fawkes took watch in a cellar below
With match and gunpowder ready to blow
For freedom and faith he awaited his fate
Little did he know it was already too late
The marching footsteps echoed around
As Guy Fawkes waited trapped underground
Soldiers like robins with puffed up chests
Dragged him out under arrest
They threw him in shackles and locked him away
To await the King and his entoure
He gave the name John Johnson and nothing more
He would not see comrades for his sake fall
Even questioned under duress
The mystery man refused to confess
So King James decreed they torture him first
And so by degree, proceed to the worst
The brave man stayed strong for a day and a night
But eventually his will gave way to his plight
He gave up his name and the truth of the plot
To replace the king with his heir begot

My Entry for @Rumplestiltskin Killer Poetry Contest - most of us in the UK know who Guy Fawkes is, but this is a part of the story that often goes untold.

What, I think you even mention this one to me before. Must of got distracted, this is dope! Iv'e never really even encountered or at least read a story about Guy Fawkes. I gotta learn more.

Nah that was one I didn't enter lol. Yeah there is so much fun stuff in history that gets missed or misrepresented. I think I have probs sent you a general overview of it, but you have to dig so deep online to find balanced sources. I feel like all the shit you learn in school about source evaluation goes out the window for most people lol. I love being able to visit places in person, see the real documents displayed there, walk in the footsteps of those who came before. I have a poem about that as well but I need a good photo of some hill top ruins and feel like I should try and take a trip to the place that inspired it. Unless you happen to have any? I would count you miraculously having the exact photo I need as lifes intervention lol. Part of why I love visiting churches here are they are so so old, they have seen to much and the cold sturdy stones echo stories long forgotten.
