Killerpix Contest Entry: Cube

in #killerpix8 years ago

My entry for the weekly #Killerpix contest, where the theme is CUBE.

What message do you get from this image, if any?

I won't pretend to have had a grand purpose when I made this image a few years ago: for me it was about trying to think outside of the box creatively while being shut in by all the so-called "rules" that beginner photographers hear about so much, especially the rule of thirds (which I think is a flawed concept, but that's a story for another day!).

Do you think there is merit in setting out guidelines for learning photographers and calling them "rules"? Does the terminology even matter?

Rule of Thirds

Sort:

To be honest, I think it's important to know the rules in the first place, learn to use them and then knowingly brake them!

Rules where made to be broken right?

Mmhmm, in some cases. Rules were definitely made to be known, then it's up to the people whether they are going to follow the rules or not, and why.

Maybe my question is more "should there be rules in photography and art?". I'm not answering it, because I don't know, but I am asking. :)

Holy Frappe, Man, this is cool! Boxes are where rules are to be found! Did you do this setup for like every industry that exists?

Is that Pumpkin Spice Frappe? Thanks! ;)

I didn't, but I suppose the same ideas can apply in many places.

Derek is a perfect compose and idea.
I liked what you tried to tell. congratulations for successful shooting. good luck in the race :)

Well thank you! :)

I love rules! Because breaking them is always fun! Interesting image and concept.

lol, that's one way of looking at it. I guess it's hard to be different if no one is doing the same thing.

I have always thought the rules were rediculious. But then again I think that about most aspects of life .

Well, the argument to that would be that if rules are truly ridiculous, what would life be like if there were no rules at all? Would life be possible? If right and wrong are the rules that govern life, maybe ugly and beauty are what govern art. We just haven't codified these things in the same way that we've done it for life, i.e. laws. I think we used to...the painters knew so much more about what constituted beauty than we do today. But that's been lost with modern art. Now you could say that we just have a shaky series of simple guidelines like the rule of thirds that are watered down versions of the theories that were prevalent years ago. Maybe we've thought outside the box so long we don't remember where the box is, or why it existed in the first place.

Makes me think of a photographer containing himself to a set rule amount, since squares are such simple shapes without creativity. Just my take :).

Squares are interesting, though, because they almost never exist in an exact form in nature...nature can do circles better than squares. Squares are a human construction, and maybe a fairly recent one? I don't know, but at some point they went from being a really cool and unique shape to being a symbol for the mundane.

I always follow the rules of photography, when it's convenient. And if it works. And if I can remember what they are. What were we talking about again?

The best answer ever! )))

We were talking about cubes, and whether you prefer to be in them or to have them in your whiskey.

The room I'm in is rather cube shaped. At there are cubes in my ice coffee. I would prefer them in vodka though ;)

I guess you can have it both ways. ;)

Your photo is great!
Also i subscribe to the ideea that rule of thirds is dumb and useless, and I think there are other thing waaay more important that most photographers dont have a clue about

Like what other things, @vmoldo? Or is that a conversation for another post, about design elements derived from classical art? :)

I was thinking eye training and color stuff but i think i will actually make a post about thus sine i started

Eye training? I don't even know what that is - I look forward to the post! :)

Thank you! :)

Brilliant shot! I love how the confused learner is sitting in the "stupid" middle, but not at the "supposed" intersection points. The positions of the camera and the tripod are also obviously "wrong"! ;)

Hehe, yes, that was on purpose. Thank you, @itchyfeetdonica! :D
