Six Weeks of Summer - Week 3: Discover Story Centre
After a busy weekend I wanted to do something low key with the kids that didn't involve travelling far. I chose to go to Discover Story Centre in Stratford East London - http://www.discover.org.uk/ which is a short bus ride away from us.
Indoor and outdoor play areas
Discover Story Centre is a place that brings books to life. It has indoor and outdoor play areas for children to enjoy. It's not a huge place but it's split over three floors and there are workshops for kids to get involved in too. It's aimed at kids aged 0-11 and their parents.
Brings books alive
One of the best things about Discover Story Centre is the interactive exhibitions. At the moment there is a The Fantastic World of Dr. Seuss which is on until 3rd September - http://www.discover.org.uk/exhibitions/ The most popular Dr. Seuss books have been brought alive in a wonderful way. It's like going into a magical world and is super exciting for kids (and adults) who are familiar with the books or films. There is a Thneed factory for kids to explore, truffula trees, Thing One and Thing Two costumes to try on, a green eggs and ham game. Someone from the story centre gathers all the kids around and reads from one of the books, all the while keeping it interactive and fun.
Free for Newham Residents
At the moment entry is free for Newham residents or those who work in the borough. This always happens for two weeks in the summer holidays. We don't live in Newham so had to pay and it was £19.50 for the four of us as the baby was free. You can stay there as long as you like and there are different time slots allocated for the exhibition and workshops. There is a cafe on the second floor but we took a packed lunch. There is a little picnic area outside where you can eat packed lunches.
What the kids thought of it
Here's a little video of what we got up to and what the kids thought of it.
If you live in or around East London then definitely check out this unique place.
