Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, the incumbent president who was up for re election won in the just concluded August 8th general election. He secured 54.27% of the votes cast against his main challenger, Raila Odinga, who garnered 44.74%. But Raila has refused to concede the election stating that the elections were rigged in Uhuru's favor . International and local observers however, gave the election a clean bill of health. John Kerry , one of the elections observers was confident in the integrity of the Kenyan elections and praised the country's election commission for its transparency and diligence. On Sunday the 13th Raila in his message to supporters in Kibera asked them to boycott work on Monday. It is too soon to see if they will heed his message as majority of them earn on day to day basis.
What is unclear is what steps the opposition leader will take since he has refused to use the legal channels in court to dispute the election results. Kenyans are hoping that the election will not be a repeat of the sham elections in 2007 which led to violence that left 1600 people dead and over six hundred thousand displaced from their own homes.
