Katana , Is it the most Viable Sword ?

in #katana7 years ago

Katana was first created in 10th Century in Japan , for Japonese warriors after their services in fighting the feodals and it still keeps its title as the worlds sharpest sword. Lets take a closer look to katana one of the important pillars of the Japanese culture.

When there were Samurais around in that era only people allowed from Daimyo can carry these sword and short sword Wakizashi. It was symbolising that the person carrying it was an important person.

The main aspects which make katana different from other swords are the building part and using part. It is a creation of an art that is almost 1000 years old. This sword made from 3 different type of steel with different carbon levels and it has an aerodinamic edge. The sides made from middlelevel carbon steel and the inner part is made of lower level carbon steel and the sharp part and the top of it made by highest carbon level steel , therefore when you water the sword it gets that slighlty deadly curve.

Katana is a decent sword with durability. They make it not to stand in long fights but the main purpose was kill the opponent with single blow. Katana usually don't get used for stabbing action it is for slicing. Only making the blade part of the katana doesn't make your job finish , the entire part of the sword requires lots of labour , it is holding part tsuka and it is protection part tsuba it all requires lots of effort and sweat. Even making this sword sharper is a form of art.

As I said the main purpose of using katana is killing the enemy with 1 blow , therefore the katanas one side is quite sharp and you can easily swing it and in order to create some momentum to the user it is slightly curve , eventhough this curve doesn't preffered it can be used to be stab your opponent too.

As we all know from kill bill it is an original samurai sword and if you deserve it as a smurai , a special master will forge katana for you , making one amazing katana takes approximetaly 1 , 1-5 year. It can easily make in shorter time however it is the accurate time for the real masters. Because of using style of katana you need to hold it with 2 hands and in order to prevent slipping in a deathly duel it made their holding part from shark leather.

Thanks for Reading & Hasta La Vista!

That's a great article. If I may I would add one or few things since this is a topic close to my field of interest. First of all, I like how you didn't present the Katana as some kind of mythical and unbreakable sword, which is often the case. So just a two additional info dumps:

  1. One of the reason for using two or three different carbon-level steels, asides from the reasons mentioned in the article was that good quality steel was really hard to come by back then in Japan. So they had to master the craft of forging together supper steel and some other (mild) steels. Not only that, even the steel used for the actual edge was not that good so they used to fold it and forge it in layers in order to hammer the impurities out. That is the reason, if you look at proper Katan up close you can see the horizontal lines along the bevel.
  2. One other thing that was, and still is done in making a Katana is the usage of clay when quenching, where the clay is applied on the spine and partially on the sides which acts as a heat-sink and results in only the edge getting properly hard. This can be seen as a visual effect that comes out after polishing and is called Hamon. The application fo clay also influences the curving of the blade in quenching. You can see both the hamon and the (slight) curve on this Nakiri I did last week:

Katanas are great for cloth or light armor I'd say. Put them against plate armors and they won't stand a chance. Ah who am I kidding no sword had a chance, that's when you resort to pommel bashing :).

In addition to being one of the swords with more history in the world. It is the one that has the most accurate and best-made edge in all history, there is no sword like this Japanese ninjas that cut more. Great feats have been carried in history with this sword and so impressive is that in present times it is still used.

How impressive is not it? how is it that has more history in the world and even in present times is used. I had the chance to have it in my hands and be able to appreciate it.

You have a new friend from Venezuela I hope we can keep reading to you
