Crypto Exchanges Explained

The first time you see an exchange interface with charts and numbers everywhere it can be a bit daunting so lets break down some of the basics and look at how exchanges work.

The Candle Chart

Most exchanges use candle charts to display price movements. Each candle or bar in the chart represents a time period with a high and a low price at which the asset traded at. You can adjust the time period to see more long or short term trends and the length of the candle shows how much volatility there is in the pricing.

The bottom bar chart shows volume or amount traded.

The Order Book

Exchanges work as a market place between buyers and sellers. Sellers will list their tokens for sale at a set price (known as an ask) and buyers will list what they are willing to pay (known as bids). If their pricing matches then a trade is executed and assets will be exchanged at the price specified.

A trader has the option of adding to the order book outside of the current pricing or executing trades at the pricing offered in existing orders.

Limit Orders

Orders are normally placed as “limit orders” in which a trader sets the amount they are willing to pay and the volume of the asset that they want to trade.

The order will either execute immediately if pricing exceeds or matches the current bid/asks or it will be added to the order book.
