End Of The Road For JPEG?

My love affair with JPEG started in 2001 when I bought my first digital camera - Kodak MC3, which was a three-in-one device that could snap photos, video and play digital music (MP3). I still have it and its in working condition.

"JPEG" stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, the name of the committee that created the JPEG standard and also other still picture coding standards

JPEG compression is used in a number of image file formats. JPEG/Exif is the most common image format used by digital cameras and other photographic image capture devices; along with JPEG/JFIF, it is the most common format for storing and transmitting photographic images on the World Wide Web. These format variations are often not distinguished, and are simply called JPEG. - wiki

Like it or not, like everything else, the wind of change is replacing everything (good and bad) in its path.

Now that virtually everyone is his/her own cameraman, not many know much about the wonderful JPEG, and perhaps won't even bother about its imminent demise. To many, a picture is a picture. That's okay as not many car owners know too much or anything about their cars either.

Photo format from Google and Mozilla could leave JPEG in the dust

- CNET

Apple's got one idea for next-gen photo technology, but a rival approach based on the new AV1 video compression tech could go a step further.

"It seems downright silly that we're still relying on compression tech from 20 years ago," said Kelly Thompson, general manager at 500px, a photo sharing and sales site. "The equipment we're using to capture and display images is now exceeding JPEG's upper limits."

Google, Mozilla and others in a group called the Alliance for Open Media are working on a rival photo technology. In testing so far, the images are 15 percent smaller than Apple's HEIC photo format, said Tim Terriberry, a Mozilla principal research engineer working on the project. But smaller sizes are just the beginning.

The project is still young -- it doesn't even have a name, much less a certain future. But it's got a strong list of allies, an affinity for web publishing and modern features that could make it the best contender yet for overcoming JPEG's 1990s-era shortcomings.

JPEG has served its purpose and served very well if I may say so.

...I will miss it just like I will the lovely MP3

for me, jpegs died when i started to edit my photos with more precision. Raw files, or even Tif give more flexiblity and better tone control when in programs such as Lightroom or Photoshop.
