In the Z Guard you should always start from your frame, framing the neck and bicep of you opponent as demonstrated in the video. Once you are able to get wrist control on the low side, you let your knee shield go and sit up then snatch the Kimura grip. One the Kimura grip is established you have a significant advantage in this position. If you are dealing with a much larger or stronger opponent you will not likely finish a Kimura here unless they are sleeping, but you can still use the grip to sweep or take the back. As you can see in the video, you bait your opponent by relinquishing your half guard, if they start to pass on the Kimura side, simply extend your grip on their wrist to their waist and watch as they tip over then pull yourself to their back. If they instead bury their arm in their stomach simply release the half guard and roll back to your other shoulder and take their back. When you have rolled onto your back you can go to ether side, keeping them guessing. Always make sure you keep your strong at all times, so they do not muscle out when you are being lazy.
