"The very word "secrecy" is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings...

Our way of life is under attack. Those who make themselves our enemy are advancing around the globe... no war ever posed a greater threat to our security.

If you are awaiting a finding of "clear and present danger," then I can only say that the danger has never been more clear and its presence has never been more imminent...

For we are opposed around the world by a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy that relies primarily on covert means for expanding its sphere of influence - on infiltration instead of invasion, on subversion instead of elections, on intimidation instead of free choice, on guerrillas by night instead of armies by day.

It is a system which has conscripted vast human and material resources into the building of a tightly knit, highly efficient machine that combines military, diplomatic, intelligence, economic, scientific and political operations.

Its preparations are concealed, not published. Its mistakes are buried, not headlined. Its dissenters are silenced, not praised.

No expenditure is questioned, no rumor is printed, no secret is revealed."

John F Kennedy

35th President of the United States

from a speech delivered to the American Newspaper Publishers Association on April 27, 1961

The threat of war in it's different forms including terrorism and nuclear war has never been greater in modern times than right now. This situation will continue to exist and persist as long as the policies of Western Nations to do proxy wars in the Middle East and elsewhere is not immediately rethought and done away with. The threat of nuclear war with Russia is minimal. What is more likely is that there could be some type of escalation with other nations that leads to an escalation with Russia because Russia chooses to defend it's interests with those Nations. I think it is unlikely that Russia would be willing to risk the destruction of it's cities for Kim from North Korea. But if China decides to help North Korea and China gets enveloped in a nuclear war with the West then it is likely that Russia will choose to stand with China out of fear that China could lose, or China could be weakened and that this would somehow affect Russia in a negative way, I could be wrong but I think I remeber reading something about a Russian Chinese security pact, so if this ia correct then this would add to the Russian's need to defend an ally. Now obviously it's a highly complex issue and hypothetical so we don't know exactly what every actor will do and what their logic will be.
To prevent a war sometimes leaders must back down. A leader who is more powerful than the one he is threatening must be willing to back off, to back down. The problem is if you are the stronger one, the one with a better economy, a stronger military and in the best case scenario the law is on your side then it is highly unlikely that you will back down. To make matters worse we are talking about leaders who are for the most part politicians and politicians want to get reelected, backing down and or calling for peace will be used by their political opponents to attack them and to claim that they weak leaders and that they are foolish a leader. And it could cause the politician an election. A leader must be willing to lose an election to do the right thing for his country and even humanity but not many leaders today have that type of fortitude of character.
