Let both sides unite to heed in all corners of the earth the command of Isaiah--to "undo the heavy burdens . . . (and) let the oppressed go free."
In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course. Since this country was founded, each generation of Americans has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty. The graves of young Americans who answered the call to service surround the globe.
Now the trumpet summons us again--not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need--not as a call to battle, though embattled we are-- but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, "rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation"--a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease and war itself.

In July 1974, while President Richard Nixon was at his Key Biscayne compound, he took a helicopter ride to Palm Beach to inspect a mansion the federal government recently had inherited.
The high upkeep that had plagued the former owner also left Nixon noncommittal as to what to do with the sprawling property. Nixon resigned a month later, and in 1980, the feds gave the place back to the former owner’s estate.

As new President Donald Trump settles into his new digs in Washington, his winter White House, Mar-a-Lago, isn’t even the first one in Palm Beach C0unty. Dating to the 1800s, most presidents spent at least a little time in the area, or at least in Florida. Who wouldn’t?

The bomb shelter at the golf course now serves a different purpose.

“It gave us excellent elevation, and now, when members tee off on the second hole, they’re teeing off from the top of a bomb shelter,” Trump told Esquire.
Though the bomb shelters at Mar-a-Lago were used mostly for storage after the president bought the estate in 1985 — former Trump butler Anthony Senecal told The Tampa Bay Times he used one as his office, while the others were used for bakery and banquet storage — Trump told Esquire he would pick Mar-a-Lago’s bomb shelters over Trump International or Westchester.
“We did tests, and the foundation is anchored into the coral reef with steel and concrete,” Trump said. “That sucker’s going nowhere.”
Trump also has access to another bomb shelter in Palm Beach County, one built for President John F. Kennedy to protect him from nuclear fallout should a missile have hit during one of Kennedy’s visits to his family’s compound in Palm Beach. That bunker, squirreled away in the scrub on Peanut Island just north of West Palm Beach in the Intracoastal Waterway, now is open for tours.

In December 1960, the SeaBees – the U.S. Navy’s construction force — supposedly began the mundane task of building a munitions depot behind the Coast Guard station on Peanut Island, Florida.
Known as “Operation Hotel,” the SeaBees actually built a secret nuclear fallout shelter for president-elect John F. Kennedy, who often spent his winters at a nearby estate on Palm Beach.
It took the SeaBees less than two weeks to complete the underground bunker, which consisted of a corrugated steel shelter covered with 25 feet of concrete, earth and lead. Official documents referred to the site as “Detachment Hotel,” and the government didn’t formerly acknowledge its existence until 1974.
Fortunately, Kennedy never had to use the bunker, but it still stands today and has been open to the public for tours since 1999.
While in operation, a small thicket of trees hid the shelter’s entrance. A steel door protected it and opened to passageways that housed a generator, air filters and pumps, radiation detectors and a decontamination shower, according to Reuters.
The main room housed 15 bunk beds, a desk and conference table — and a communication center consisting primarily of a ham radio and an escape hatch to a helipad.
All combined, the fear set off a bunker-building spree. Americans installed around 200,000 backyard bunkers and fallout shelters by 1965. These shelters ranged widely in terms of style, construction, size and effectiveness.
The simplest bunkers consisted of corrugated metal tubes, reinforced wooden cellars and cast-concrete capsules. On the other end was Las Vegas business executive Gerard Henderson’s extravagant 15,000-square-foot subterranean fallout shelter featuring hot tubs and an indoor swimming pool.

During the Cold War, the US government launched a country-wide effort to prepare its citizens for a possible thermonuclear war. Children were taught at school to duck under desks and families were instructed to build fallout shelters and stock food. Some Americans took these suggestions very seriously. Among them was businessman Girard Brown (Jerry) Henderson.
Henderson constructed a luxurious fallout shelter at his home in Las Vegas, 26 feet underground. It was built for comfort, fitted with swimming pools, a sauna, a garden with fountains and waterfalls, a mini gold course, and even a barbeque hidden inside an artificial rock. Instead of running for cover when the bomb hit, Henderson figured it would easier and safer to live there at all times.
From the outside and on the surface, it’s a modest two-story suburban house. The only sign of unusualness are the large number of air-conditioning units placed on the ground and camouflaged by clusters of large rocks.
