GUIDE TO BUYING A GIA DIAMOND

in #jewelry6 years ago

GIA is an international gemological institute based in the United States but has branches worldwide. Diamantaires around the world send the diamonds to receive a GIA certificate which will detail the diamond's qualities that determine its value. Diamonds with GIA certificates are considered to be of a higher standard, since the Institute is considered very strict and its grading processes are rigorous. In addition to being a gemology institute, AAA maintains colleges, magazines and research and is an authority for diamond knowledge.

Did you know?Almost all the gemological institutes are called in the name of 3 foreign letters: EGL, IGI, HRD, IGL, GCI, and so many are confused between the various institutes. When in fact GIA is the most considered.

The advantages of buying GIA-certified diamonds are prominent and mainly:

  1. The diamond is tested before being placed in the world's most rigorous lab.
  2. GIA is an international laboratory with branches around the world and is therefore recognized and traded worldwide.
  3. Usually there is an engraving of the certificate number on the diamond belt that makes it easier to identify.
  4. A GIA certificate is considered "negotiable" and if you wish to trade in the future, it will make it easier for you to trade

The disadvantage of purchasing GIA-certified diamonds:

These transactions are usually higher, since the long process of testing the laboratory and the worsening of the results increase the product to the end customer. If your total budget is less than 5,000 NIS, it is not certain that jewelry with GIA-certified diamonds is for you.

Which diamonds will have a GIA certificate?

GIA certified diamonds can be found in the market starting from 0.30 carats, but these certificates are more popular for diamonds of half-carats or more.

Safe and correct buying tips:

1. Purchase only merchants who have a "diamond trade license". An example of a trade license can be seen on the side, so be sure to buy from the source for diamonds and from an authorized dealer with a diamond trade license from the Ministry of Industry and therefore subject to Israel's diamond trading laws.

2. The GIA Certificate is a hard cardboard certificate that is available in shades of ivory and gold and is available in two sizes. Examples of GIA certificates can be seen below. We have already heard of cases where customers received a photocopy of a certificate, a print from the GIA site of a certificate copy, or a certificate from another lab with a similar name.

3. Buying diamonds is a serious business - insist on receiving an invoice. Would you consider buying an apartment from a contractor or a vehicle from an importer without an invoice? When you are tempted to make an unlisted cash transaction and save your VAT, you are actually waiving all your consumer rights.  No other document has been accepted in a consumer court other than an invoice.

4. Be sure to purchase the jewelry set with a diamond bearing a GIA certificate, and not the diamond without a ring so that they can not claim that "replacing" a diamond.

5. After placing the ring, ask the place where you sold the ring to check the diamond engraving with a microscope - so you can make sure that the diamond matches the certificate you purchased.
