Many decades ago, a story was born within my family, which in its beginnings was fun and adventurous, revolved around my grandmother and her three daughters who were known as the four Marys, since they all bore the name of Maria. Initially he was contacted in the privacy of our home, and then shared with tourists and visitors, becoming a dark and reflective legend, part of the folklore of my people.
The legend was born on a rainy day in May of 1920, when the four Marias entered early in the morning to their small family ranch, which was called "The hand of God", the mission was to clean the cacao plants and make their harvest.
To get to the hacienda, the 4 Marías had to walk for 4 hours in the thick forest, they would also have to cross a small, harmless and calm river, while the small trip lasted, they sang, they alternated to tell jokes, there was an atmosphere full of joy. At 12 noon they arrived at the hacienda, immediately proceeded to clean the plants and collect the cocoa.
The day passed between songs and humor, everything went with total normality, there reigned the joy, when of sudden form of the sky multiple rays and sparks broke off, unleashing a heavy rain, which forced the four Marías to locate a place to protect themselves that deluge, which seemed to come from a passage in the bible.
After a few hours of that torrential rain, they decided to suspend the activity, on returning they observed that the road had been blocked, and that small, harmless and calm river turned into a furious and noisy river, so they had to take a route that had never been taken before, there was no singing or humor, the atmosphere became tense and gray.
After a few minutes you feel a strong noise of stones and water, came to 4 Marías a flood of the river, an overwhelming force of nature that dragged trees and everything that crossed their path, forcing them to take a route that was unknown by them.
As they entered the forest to avoid flooding they felt more distressed, after spending an hour on the way to the unexplored, they managed to discover a small abandoned hut, upon entering the cabin they observed that many years ago no one had been in she. After 6 in the afternoon, Grandma decides it was the best and safest to spend the night there.
With many nerves and totally wet from the rain, the 4 Marys decided to turn a little to recognize the whole hut, immediately observed that there were pieces of dry wood and proceeded to light a small and improvised campfire.
The youngest of the Marias takes some fruits from her purse that she picked up on her way and proceeds to share them with her family. A long night is coming! Grandmother said, we must stay calm, rest, tomorrow we will return to our house.
Meanwhile in the village, everyone was alarmed by the rain that persisted strongly. In the house of the 4 Marías there was great concern for not knowing anything about them.
The next day, Abuela María observed through the window, that the rain had diminished, they immediately wake up their daughters and initiate the retreat from that place.
After a few minutes of walking, they observe that all the roads were covered, the bridges fallen, and the river was still very strong, and as if by magic the rain started again, then Abuela María decided it was safer to return.
Back in the cabin, the grandmother encourages her daughters to stay calm, and invites to seek distraction for the duration of their stay, suddenly they heard a cry "Run, run and come see" Shouts My aunt Maria Yelitza When they arrived at the site , they noticed that he had discovered an old trunk containing old clothes, some photos, books and a wax candle.
Surprised by the discovery they start a game with the candle, which consisted of lighting the candle and summoning the spirits, you could ask questions about the future, and so when the 4 Marías, especially my mother María Yelitza, started this adventure by The unknown.
The game of the Candle consisted in lighting a candle and around it they had to place themselves in a circle with their bare feet, and the call is initiated to all those souls that are present.
If the candle flickered it was the signal that was present to someone from another world, when asking questions, if the light went to the right, it was a yes, but if it turned to the left, it was not the question.
After a few minutes the light of the candle began to blink "from top to bottom", it was evident that a deity was present, the questions began immediately. You're a woman? And the candle answered to the left, that is, it was a being from another male world, did you live in this cabin? He answered on the right, that is, yes.
Successively they asked many questions and came to the conclusion that the deity that was present, was a man who lived in that cabin more than 100 years ago, never married, had no children, was skinny, tall, wearing a hat and by name Humberto, in the same way indicated that in the trunk was a painted portrait of him.
Humberto welcomed them, the trees where he could place fruit to eat, and fresh water to drink.
All Marías ask questions about the future, about boyfriends, riches, future and much more.
Especially my aunt María Yelitza made an affinity with that Deity called Humberto, she responded quickly, even when she went to her, smells of eucalyptus were felt in the environment. So they passed without realizing that night, between questions and stories.
After the rain, the 4 Marías say goodbye to that peculiar place, they start the trip to their home, once they arrived, they share their adventure with the rest of the family, they had left behind the story, all but my aunt María Yelitza, who remained in contact with Humberto.
All the afternoons when returning from the school the contact with Humberto begins, they spent hours and hours, she asking to him of his life "evidently Maria Yelitza and Humberto were friendly"
After a few years, my aunt María Yelitza is engaged in marriage, and one day before the wedding, she makes a final contact, "Humberto promises that she will always remember" "And when she asks for it, she will look for it".
The last decades passed, until the day my aunt María Yelitza's husband dies, and she submerges in sadness and pain.
One day my aunt María Yelitza made another approach with the candle and got in touch with Humberto, they spent hours communicating, my aunt laughed, sang and was happy, to the point that my family already thought I was sick in the head, she said that Humberto was going to look for her to be happy.
The degree of delirium manifested by María Yelitza already had the whole family confused and decided to communicate with the hospital to intern her, thus placing her on medical treatment and seeking a cure for her situation.
"Everything is ready" Manifest his eldest son, already comes from the hospital to take my mom.
"Top, Top" rattles the door, and when he opened it, he was a skinny, tall man, and a hat, with a smell of eucalyptus, and that was there for María Yelitza. "Go ahead," exclaimed his son. "Here is my mother".
