I am curious when it became such an English quality to be infatuated with endless rules that are pedantically enforced. It's like a whole country of HOA committee members. This was not historically the case. They literally gifted us the modern legal and cultural conceptions of liberty. For all the high talk about Enlightenment values, most of the non-British Enlightenment thinkers were either anti-liberty or had some very, very strange notions about it (I'm looking at you, France). Yet today the Brits seem to revel in stripping away the freedom of themselves and others.

I really wish Clarkson would be about 20% more aggressive and descriptive in his complaints about the everything-police in Britain. I don't know that a lot of American viewers realize he is not being hyperbolic, and is in fact not showing even half of what they have to deal with. Not that it's much better in the States, we're just a bit behind that curve.
